Flat Karina Visits New Orleans!

Flat Karina had quite a busy day in the Big Easy!

The Big Easy is just one of the many nicknames that New Orleans, Louisiana, has. Other nicknames it has are the Crescent City and NOLA. 

• The state bird is the brown pelican (the NBA basketball team is also called the Pelicans!).
• The state tree is the bald cypress.
• The state flower is the magnolia.
• I don't know what the state food is, but there sure are a ton of yummy foods here: beignets, pralines, crawfish, YUMMM!
• The city is known for Mardi Gras and over 400 festivals every year and is also world renowned for jazz music.

Flat Karina visited Lafayette Square! 

This is the second oldest park in New Orleans. The square was named after Gilbert du Motier, the Marquis de Lafayette, but the statue in the center of the square (the one I'm standing in front of ) is actually of Henry Clay, an important political figure in the early to mid 1800's. Now Lafayette Square is still used with concerts and cultural events held year round. On Wednesdays in the summer there's Wednesday at the Square, a series of free concerts for all of NOLA to enjoy.

Next, Flat Karina visited the Superdome! 
The Superdome is the home of the New Orleans Saints, the NFL football team of this city. New Orleanians LOVE their Saints! The team colors are black and gold and the city gets really excited every time a Saints game is nearing. 

Aside from the Saints playing, a lot of neat things have happened at the Superdome.
Earlier this year, the Dalai Lama spoke at Tulane University's graduation at the Superdome.

Also, the Superdome housed many people who were unable to evacuate during Hurricane Katrina in August 2005 (when you were just born!)
